WebDual classing outshining multiclassing generally appplies to casters. I really do not see any benefit of dualclassing over multiclassing in the case of Fighter/Thief. You can argue for it either way. At level 9 or 13, since this is a BG2 game I would suggest 13. Pretty sure you don't get access to the stronghold. My first AD&D RPG game on infinity engine was Planescape Torment and I fugging loved it. The choice of the class for TNO was fairly easy, in your party you have 2-3 fighters, 1 good thief, 1 cleric and a multiclass fighter/mage. WebElf, Dwarf, Half-Orc, Halfling, Gnome, all of those can work very well. I recommend using a shield, especially early game, to make up for the fact that you can only have up to studded leather armor when using your thief skills. In fact, first few levels, have some plate armor or whatever you can get.
